Marienplatz and the pedestrian zone
The large pedestrian zone in the area of Marienplatz feels like a fairytale, but it’s almost always crowded with tourists. Nevertheless, you have to visit this area once and sit down to listen to the world-famous Glockenspiel at city hall.
Viktualienmarkt
The Viktualienmarkt is only a short walk from Marienplatz. You can buy fresh fruits and vegetables from all over Bavaria here, or sit in the beer garden. But there is much more than just fruits and vegetables at the market—there are also a range of gourmet ingredients, a coffee roaster, wine, flowers, and much more. It's a lot of fun to wander around the market and try out new specialties.
Glockenbachviertel
When you want to escape the tourist zone, walk through Sendlinger Tor, which was built in the Middle Ages, and enter the Glockenbachviertel. This neighborhood is located south of the center, and there are a lot of cafes, pubs, boutiques, and so on. This quarter is also the historically gay neighborhood of Munich.
Museumsviertel
The Museum Quarter in Maxvorstadt, northwest of the center, has lots of great art museums. The largest are the three Pinakothek museums: the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der Moderne. The collections inside are very good, from the old masters in the Alte Pinakothek to the abstract paintings in the Moderne Pinakothek. There are also lots of other museums here: the Lenbachhaus, with a large collection of Kandinsky, Museum Brandhorst, with contemporary art, the Glyptothek, with Greek and Roman antiquities, and many more.
English Garden
North of the center is the English Garden, a massive park. When it's nice out, go here for a picnic or just to lie in the sun. There are also lots of bike paths, small streams, and the beautiful Isar River. Between the city center and the English Garden, you’ll also find the Hofgarten, a formal, royal garden with lots of flowers.
Day trips from Munich
If you have time for a day trip, there are many beautiful and interesting options near Munich. A few favorites are:
Andechs Monastery
Andechs Monastery is located on a hill above Herrsching, a small village on the Ammersee. Take the S-Bahn to Herrsching, then either take the bus or hike about 4km through a beautiful forest to the monastery. The Benedictine monastery was built in the 15th century and is still a pilgrimage site due to the holy relics there. Andechs also has a monastery brewery where the beer is still brewed by monks. It's a very nice place to have a beer and something to eat. After your monastery visit, take a walk along the Ammersee, where you can swim or sit on the beach.
Alpine hike next to Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen stands at the foot of the Alps, and many regional trains go there daily. The trip takes about an hour. From there, you can take a tourist train directly to the Alps. Of course, you can ski here in the winter, but in the summer the landscape is incredibly beautiful. The train ride only takes a few minutes, and then you can either hike on foot or take a gondola to the top. Regardless of which trail you choose, you’ll have panoramic views every step of the way. There are also Bavarian restaurants and small snack bars along the hiking trails—a wheat beer or a coffee tastes especially good when you're sitting outside in the sun looking at the mountain peaks.
Visit the island of Chiemsee
Also about an hour from Munich is Lake Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria. To get there, take a train to Prien am Chiemsee and then a ferry to the island. There are two islands to visit: the Herreninsel and the Fraueninsel. The Herreninsel is bigger and has two castles on it: the "Old Castle" and the "New Castle." The "Old Castle" was previously a monastery, but in the 19th century, King Ludwig II bought the island and used the castle as a residence while he built the "New Castle." The "New Castle" is quite opulent and was built in the image of Versailles. If you take the ferry a little further, you'll arrive at Fraueninsel. The Fraueninsel is much smaller than the Herreninsel and has a Benedictine nunnery that was founded in 782.

Die große Fußgängerzone in der Gegend vom Marienplatz ist märchenhaft schön, aber fast immer überfüllt mit Touristen. Trotzdem muss man einmal diese Zone besuchen und sich dort hin setzen um sich das weltberühmte Glockenspiel am Rathaus anzuhören.
Viktualienmarkt
Der Viktualienmarkt ist nur ein paar Minuten zu Fuß entfernt von Marienplatz und da kann man frisches Obst und Gemüse aus ganz Bayern kaufen oder sich im Biergarten sitzen. Aber beim Markt gibt es viel mehr als nur Obst und Gemüse. Dort gibt es zum Beispiel auch verschiedene Gourmet-Zutaten, ein Kaffeerösterei, Wein, Blumen und vieles mehr. Es macht viel Spass, über den Markt zu wandern und neue Spezialitäten auszuprobieren.
Glockenbachviertel
Wenn man der Touristenzone entfliehen will, kann man durch das Sendlinger Tor gehen, das im Mittelalter erbaut wurde, und kommt in das Glockenbachviertel. Dieses Viertel liegt südlich vom Zentrum, und es gibt hier viel Cafes, Lokale, kleine Geschäfte, und so weiter. Dieses Viertel ist auch die historische schwule Nachbarschaft Münchens.
Museumsviertel
Das Museumsviertel in der Maxvorstadt, nordwestlich vom Zentrum, hat viele schöne Kunstmuseen. Die größten sind die drei Pinakotheken: die Alte Pinakothek, die Neue Pinakothek und die Pinakothek der Moderne. Die Sammlungen drin sind sehr gut, von den alten Meistern in der alten Pinakothek bis zu den abstrakten Gemälden in der Pinakothek der Moderne. Außerdem gibt es hier viele Museen: das Lenbachhaus, mit einer grossen Sammlung von Kandinsky, Museum Brandhorst, mit zeitgenössischen Kunst ,die Glyptothek, mit griechischen und römischen Antiquitäten. und viele mehr.
Englischer Garten
Nördlich vom Zentrum liegt der Englische Garten, ein sehr großer Park. Wenn es schön ist, muss man dahin gehen, um ein Picknick zu machen oder einfach in der Sonne zu liegen. Es gibt auch viele Fahrradwege, kleine Bäche, und die Isar, einen schönen Fluss. Angrenzend, zwischen Zentrum und den Englischen Garten, ist auch der Hofgarten, ein formaler, königlicher Garten mit vielen Blumen.
Tagestouren von München
Wenn man Zeit für einen Tagesausflug hat, gibt es viele schöne und interessante Möglichkeiten in der Nähe von München. Ein paar Favoriten sind:
Kloster Andechs
Das Kloster Andechs liegt auf einem Hügel oberhalb von Herrsching, einem kleinen Dorf am Ammersee. Man kann mit der S-Bahn nach Herrsching fahren, dann entweder mit dem Bus fahren oder ca. 4km durch einen schönen Wald zum Kloster wandern. Das benediktinische Kloster wurde im 15. Jahrhundert gebaut und ist noch ein Wallfahrtsort, wegen der heiligen Relikte, die es dort gibt. Bei Andechs gibt es auch eine Klosterbrauerei, wo das Bier noch von den Mönchen gebraut wird. Es ist ein sehr schöner Ort, um ein Bier zu trinken und etwas zu essen. Nach dem Klosterbesuch kann man am Ammersee vorbeigehen, wo man schwimmen oder am Strand sitzen kann.
Alpenwanderung neben Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen steht am Fuße der Alpen und viele Regionalzüge fahren täglich dahin. Die Fahrt dauert ungefähr eine Stunde. Dann gibt es eine Touristenbahn, womit man direkt in die Alpen fahren kann. Natürlich kann man hier im Winter Skifahren, aber im Sommer ist die Landschaft unglaublich schön. Diese Fahrt dauert nur einige Minuten und dann kann man entweder zu Fuß in den Bergen klettern oder mit einer Gondelbahn nach oben fahren. Unabhängig davon welchen Wanderweg man wählt, kann man auf jedem Schritt und Tritt einen neuen Panoramablick genießen. . Es gibt auch bayerische Restaurants und kleine Imbissstuben an den Wanderwegen—ein Weißbier oder ein Kaffee schmeckt besonders gut, wenn man draussen in der Sonne sitzt und die Berggipfel anschaut.
Inselbesuch am Chiemsee
Auch ungefähr eine Stunde von München entfernt ist der Chiemsee, der größte See in Bayern. Man kann mit der Bahn nach Prien am Chiemsee fahren und dann eine Fähre zur Insel nehmen. Man kann t zwei Inseln besuchen: die Herreninsel und die Fraueninsel. Die Herreninsel ist größer und es gibt dort zwei Schlösser: das “Alte Schloss” und das “Neue Schloss”. Das “Alte Schloss” war vorher ein Kloster, aber im 19. Jahrhundert hat König Ludwig II die Insel erworben. Er hat dieses Schloss als eine Residenz benutzt, als er das “Neue Schloss” erbaut hat. Das “Neue Schloss” ist sehr opulent und wurde nach dem Bild Versailles erbaut. Wenn man mit der Fähre ein bisschen weiter fährt, kommt man an der Fraueninsel an. Die Fraueninsel ist viel kleiner als die Herreninsel und dort gibt es ein Benediktiner Nonnenkloster, das im 782 gegründet wurde.
